Types of Tree Chippers

Woodchippers, or tree chippers, are machines that convert wood—most often tree limbs or trunks—into woodchips that can be used for trails, garden bedding, mulch or other landscaping uses. They can also be used for making paper. They are generally powered by an internal combustion engine and built on wheeled frames so they can be towed behind a truck. Some high power chipper models are mounted on trucks and have hydraulic cranes.

The chipper blades are usually in a hopper with a collar that has sharp blades for cutting up the wood. The chips exit through a chute.

High-Torque Roller

Some shredders have rollers that “grab” the branch and pull it through. Among these are high-torque, low-speed grinding rollers driven by an electric motor that are quiet and dust free. Some of these have a feature that prevents jamming.

Drum

Drum chippers have a large steel drum powered by a motor, usually using a belt.  Drum chippers are often called “chuck-and-duck” chippers because of how fast the chips fly from the drum.

Disc

Disc chippers are a newer design. They tend to be less energy efficient than drum chippers but they produce smaller, more uniform chips. Disc chippers have wheels that draw the material from the hopper toward the disc, which has blades mounted on it.  The disk is perpendicular to the incoming material

Modern Tubgrinder

These are much larger woodchippers and tree chippers called “whole tree chippers” and “recyclers.” These can often handle tree trunks of two to six feet and may be drums, disc chippers or use both.

Stump Grinders

A stump grinder or stump cutter is a piece of equipment or an  attachment that gets rid of tree stumps by grinding them away with a rotating cutting disc. Some stump grinders are smaller and can be operated by a single person on foot, others are huge for clearing away growth-heavy areas for construction or agriculture. Many pieces of equipment, such as skid steer loaders, excavators and forklifts have attachments that will grind stumps.

Tips for Buying Tree Chippers or Stump Grinders

  • Consider safety. Some tree chippers have the ability to stop on a dime and reverse action so that if a person’s hand or clothing is caught or in danger of being caught, injury can be prevented.
  • Check with the manufacturer’s recommendations before buying an attachment for stump grinding for your skid steer loader or other heavy equipment. Not all attachments are compatible.
